Today I would like to introduce an idea how to realize a RMS-Converter with PoE.
The RMS-CONVERTER-100 is a used to integrate digital non-RMS devices to RMS. It communicates with several types of devices as e. g. HF5 or HL-NT, logs and sends the data to the RMS as an IOT device. The RMS-CONVERTER is based on a SBC (Single Board Computer) that need a separate 230VAC/5VDC switching power supply. If the customer wants to install the RMS-Converter e. g. into an electrical cabinet, that it could be difficult to position the power supply. In this case it would be nice to hav a solution using POE.
PoE Splitter (Link)
Principle
The principle is pretty simple. The device splitts the power from the data of the ethernet line with PoE - on the contrary to a POE Injector.
Thereby, a 230V plug and power supply aren’t necessary anymore.
Setup with PoE-Switch, PoE-Splitter and RMS-Converter
Note
- The PoE Splitter should be able to supply 1A current at 5VDC.
- Please take care about the size of the barrel plug (diameter of 5.5mm). If you take a PoE Splitter with a wrong plug, the RMS-Converter will not operate properly. It seems not necessary to mention such a tip, but I have already seen customer requests where the diameter of other power suply plugs was slightly too thin. In such a case, the RMS-Converter works until the plug is touched by someone or moved due to some shocks or vibration. Than the power supply would be interrupted, and the related system parts are not in communication anymore.
If anyone of you has further ideas, please leave a comment here.
