Applicable to RMS-WEB server-based installs only.
Have recently encountered an issue where an SMTP connection was broken at the customer's mail server. RMS outputs the following message: "The SMTP requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated. The server response was: 5.7.1 Client was not authenticated" or "The server response was: 5.7.1 Unable to relay". The solution was resolved within the active directory user parameters. The user in question is the user RMS utilizes to authenticate to the SMTP server under the 'System' tab. Under the user's security permissions, be sure to have Exchange Users checked to ON.
Further, if the customer wanted to use an encrypted connection to the SMTP server (recommended), the full URL was required for the server, and not just the server name. Example, not just 'MAILSERVER', but 'MAILSERVER.ROTRONIC.COM' (just an example, not a real link).
